Established in New York in the early 1970s, PFLAG is a worldwide organization with a presence in Australia. Our organisation works to support and advocate for families with members who are gender diverse, sexually diverse, or questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.
PFLAG+ Australia is a volunteer-based organisation, mostly run by parents and loved ones of those who are gender diverse or sexually diverse. Our organisation is not affiliated with any political or religious group and relies on grants and donations to provide support to the LGBTIQ+ community and their loved ones.
Our chapters and groups across Australia offer peer support (through regular group meetings, a telephone support line, referrals, and connections to further resources), and resources to help create a safe and accepting environment for children within their families, whilst also advocating for the rights of the gender and sexually diverse community, through activities such as school visits, media commentary, parliamentary submissions, community and corporate events.
Whilst coming out can often be a traumatic experience, many PFLAG members have reported that family life improves after a child is able to be honest about their identity. By breaking down assumptions and providing educational resources, PFLAG+ can help you to best help your loved ones and friends during and after they come out.
Whether you’d like to get in touch with a peer from your local PFLAG+ group, assist with developing a local group, or volunteer, or provide feedback, please contact us today - we’d love to hear from you.
